Orders, pickups and shares, from the first text to paid

The selling app built on a working Georgia farm. Eggs, poultry, meat by the cut and shares of an animal, with who ordered what, who picks up when, and who still owes.

iPhone, iPad and Mac. Eggs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, beef, pork, lamb and goat.

Today screen: what's owed, open orders, Saturday's pickups, a processing-day notice and shares still to sell

Sound familiar?

“Who ordered what for Saturday?”

Solved: orders come in by text, phone or at the door, and line up by pickup day and place. Check people off the pickup list as they come.

“Did she pay for last week’s eggs?”

Solved: every customer shows what they owe, what’s on order and what they paid ahead, by cash, check, Venmo or card.

“How much of that hog is still for sale?”

Solved: each animal shows its halves and quarters, who reserved them, the deposits, and a waiting list to offer the rest to.

“What do I bill on a 99-pound half?”

Solved: hanging weight times your price, processing and extras, less the deposit, worked out and sent as a PDF bill.

“What’s left in which freezer?”

Solved: stock by product or by freezer, with what’s set aside for orders kept apart from what’s free to sell.

“Can I still sell those chickens fresh?”

Solved: the selling rules for eggs, poultry and red meat are checked as you go, each with its source. You decide; the app shows why.

Up and running in an evening

Add what you sell

Products and prices, by the each, the dozen or the pound; your pickup places and tax rates. Customers come from your Contacts in a tap.

Take orders and shares

Orders with a pickup day, stand and market sales in a few taps, and shares of an animal with their deposits.

Follow Today

Pickups, what to set aside, deposits and cut sheets due, processor days, bills to send and who owes, all in one list.

Market screen: big buttons for each product with what's left, the cart and Cash, Venmo and Card buttons

Orders, pickups and the stand

From stock: eggs, whole birds and frozen cuts, ordered, set aside, picked up and paid.

  • Pickup day, place and time are all optional, for orders by arrangement or seasonal ones like Thanksgiving turkeys
  • Free stock shown as you take an order, with a warning when there isn’t enough
  • Weigh by-the-pound items at pickup and the price follows the label weight
  • A pickup list for each day and place; check people off as they come
  • Stand and market days: big buttons, a running total and Cash, Venmo or Card, no customer needed
  • Discounts, credits and refunds kept as their own dated records, so a paid order stays as it was
  • A PDF receipt for any order, with the egg safe-handling statement on egg orders
  • A reminder the evening before each pickup day
A half-hog share: deposit paid, cut sheet in, weighed at 99 pounds hanging, bill sent

Shares, from deposit to the final bill

Whole, half, quarter or your own split of a steer, hog, lamb or goat, each with its steps ticked off.

  • Priced by hanging weight, live weight or per head, with deposits by size, all set by you
  • An estimate before the butcher day, and the bill from the processor’s hanging weights after
  • Processing on the bill when you pay the processor, or left off when the customer does
  • Cut sheets filled in on the phone, with ready-made sheets to start from and “same as last time”, sent to the processor as a PDF
  • Processor bookings with reminders, including the 48-hour notice Georgia asks for before you process poultry on the farm
  • A waiting list, with the offer text ready to send when a quarter frees up
  • A pricing guide: your costs to a break-even price per pound, next to USDA’s pasture-raised pork prices
What's available: a ready-to-send message listing eggs, chicken, turkey, beef and pork with prices and shares left

Tell customers what’s available

One tap writes the message from what’s actually in stock and the shares still open.

  • Prices in plain words, “$6 a dozen”, and how many are left if you like
  • Shares still to sell, with the butcher day and the price a pound
  • Edit anything, then send it by Messages or Mail, post it, or copy it to your website
  • Send it to the customers who asked: one email with everyone in BCC, or a text to each person in turn, so it’s never a group chat
Reports: sold this year, orders and shares, sales tax, owed and deposits held, sales by product

Know what sold, and what you made

Reports for this month, last month, this year or last.

  • Sales by product, by month and by customer, and money in by cash, check, Venmo or card
  • Sales tax collected at each rate, and deposits held on shares not billed yet
  • Profit per animal, with the raising costs from your pricing guide
  • Sales of products you raised for Schedule F, line 2, for you or your tax preparer
  • Export everything as an Excel workbook
Market's widget on an iPhone home screen: Saturday's pickups at the farm and the market, what's owed, and a to-do list

Pickup day at a glance

A widget for the home screen, the Lock Screen and the Mac.

  • Today’s pickups, or the next ones, with who’s getting what and what’s still to set aside
  • What customers owe, and on the large size what else needs doing: deposits, cut sheets, processor days
  • Tap a pickup to open that day’s list and check people off
Search for "hog": Hog 1 and Hog 2 with their butcher days, then New hog, Reserve a share of Hog 2, weights from the processor and pork share prices

Find anything in a few letters

Pull down on Today and type what you’re after.

  • A customer by name or phone number, an order, a hog or steer, or a product
  • Or the job you want to do: “new order”, “who owes”, “butcher dates”, “cut sheet”, “freezer”
  • Spelling slips are fine: “farmers markt” still finds the market sale
  • Tap a result to go straight there; Command-F on an iPad keyboard or the Mac

Knows the selling rules, and shows its sources

Georgia’s rules first, each shown with where it comes from. The app never gives legal advice: it tells you what the rule says, and you decide.

Shares of an animal

Custom-exempt meat is for the owner’s household, so shares are sold before the butcher day and never go into stock for resale (21 USC 623(a), 9 CFR 303.1).

Meat by the cut

Only from inspected processing, USDA or Georgia’s state program, so only inspected lots can be sold by the cut.

Poultry you process

The on-farm exemption’s notice before processing day, and fresh birds frozen once they’re past 48 hours (Georgia Department of Agriculture).

Built on our own farm

I’m Mike Kummer. We sell eggs, broilers, turkeys and meat from our farm in Chattooga County, Georgia. Orders come to us by text, by phone, at the farm stand and at the market, and family hand out pickups on their own phones.

Market puts all of that in one place. The selling rules come from the USDA, the Georgia Department of Agriculture and university extension services, and the app names each source.

Questions

How do I find everything it can do?

Pull down on Today and tap the search box: before you type, it lists everything the app can do for your farm, grouped by job. Or see everything Market can do. Now and then the end of Today also suggests a feature your own records say would help.

Does it take card payments?

No. Market records how each customer paid: cash, check, Venmo, a card on your own reader, or something else. There’s no payment account to open and no fee on your sales.

Do I need a website or online store?

No. Customers order the way they do now, by text, phone or in person. Market writes your “what’s available” message to send by text or email, or to post on a website you already have.

Do I need internet at the market?

No. Everything works offline and syncs through iCloud when you’re back in range.

Where are my records kept?

On your iPhone and in your own iCloud account. Your customers’ names and numbers stay there too. We don’t keep a copy of your farm on our servers.

What if I get a new phone?

Sign in with the same Apple Account and iCloud brings your farm back. You can also make a backup file of the whole farm any time (Settings, Back up and restore) and save it to Files or send it to yourself; the app keeps a daily copy on your phone too.

Can I get my records out?

Yes, any time. Reports export an Excel workbook of your sales, shares, payments and sales tax for a month or a year, and Back up and restore saves the whole farm in one file. Your records are yours.

Is it legal advice?

No. The app shows each selling rule with its source and a link, so you can check it. Rules differ by state and change; Georgia’s are in the app first. When in doubt, ask your state’s department of agriculture.

What does it cost?

The beta is free. Pricing will be set before launch.

Is it on Android?

Not yet. It’s iPhone, iPad and Mac for now.

Try it free on your own farm

I’m looking for farms that sell direct, by the dozen or by the half hog, to test the beta and tell me what’s missing.
